What is a DOT physical?
A DOT physical is a medical exam required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for most commercial vehicle drivers. Its purpose is simple: to confirm you're physically able to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. Pass it, and you receive a medical examiner's certificate — your "medical card."
At The Well MD in Greer, SC, we perform DOT physicals for truck drivers, bus operators and other CMV holders across the Upstate. Here's how to walk in prepared.
What to bring
Photo ID
A valid government-issued photo identification.
Glasses, contacts or hearing aids
Bring what you normally use — vision and hearing are part of the exam.
A list of your medications
Include dosages, and note the prescribing provider where you can.
Records for any conditions
If you manage diabetes, heart conditions or sleep apnea, bring relevant letters or logs from your specialist.
Blood pressure history
If you monitor it at home, recent readings can be helpful.
What's checked during the exam
- Vision and hearing
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Urinalysis (screens for underlying conditions)
- A general physical examination
- A review of your health history
A few tips: get a good night's sleep, go easy on caffeine and salt before your visit (both can affect your blood pressure reading), and bring documentation from your specialist if you manage a condition like diabetes, a heart condition or sleep apnea. A little preparation is often the difference between a one-visit exam and a return trip.
