The Basics

What is typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is a potentially serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It spreads through contaminated food and water and is common in many developing regions around the world.

Without treatment, typhoid fever can lead to serious complications requiring hospitalization. Vaccination is one of the best ways to reduce your risk.

Is It Right for You?

Who should consider the typhoid vaccine?

Typhoid vaccination is recommended for many travelers visiting:

Common destinations

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Central America
  • South America
  • The Caribbean
  • Parts of the Middle East

You may be at higher risk if

  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Participating in mission trips
  • Traveling to rural areas
  • Backpacking
  • Staying for extended periods
  • Eating local foods
  • Working in healthcare or humanitarian settings
Your Options

Vaccine options

Depending on your age, health history, and travel plans, we may recommend one of two options. During your consultation, we'll determine which vaccine is most appropriate.

Injectable typhoid vaccine

  • Single injection
  • Appropriate for many travelers
  • Recommended before travel per current guidelines

Oral typhoid vaccine

For eligible travelers, an oral vaccine may also be an option. We'll review whether it fits your age, health history, and itinerary during your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still get typhoid if I’m careful with food?

Yes. Even careful travelers can be exposed through contaminated food, beverages, or water. Vaccination adds an important layer of protection but does not replace safe food and water practices.

How early should I get vaccinated?

We generally recommend scheduling your travel consultation several weeks before departure to allow time for vaccination and any additional travel preparations.

Do I need other vaccines too?

Possibly. Depending on your destination, additional vaccines such as Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Cholera, or Meningococcal vaccine may be recommended.
