The Basics

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow Fever is a serious viral illness transmitted through infected mosquitoes in parts of Africa and South America. While many people experience mild illness, severe infections can cause liver failure, bleeding disorders, organ failure, and death.

Fortunately, a single Yellow Fever vaccine provides excellent protection for most travelers.

Is It Right for You?

Who should receive the Yellow Fever vaccine?

The Yellow Fever vaccine is recommended or required for travelers visiting many countries in:

Regions at risk

  • West Africa
  • Central Africa
  • East Africa
  • Parts of South America

Many countries also require proof of vaccination before entry — even if you are only transiting through an affected country.

If you're traveling for

  • Mission trips
  • Medical missions
  • Humanitarian work
  • Business travel
  • Safari adventures
  • Tourism
  • Visiting friends and relatives

We'll review your itinerary and determine whether vaccination is recommended or required.

International Certificate of Vaccination

The Well MD is an authorized Yellow Fever Vaccination Center

Following vaccination, eligible patients receive the official International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — commonly known as the “Yellow Card” — recognized worldwide. This certificate may be required for entry into certain countries.

How far in advance should I schedule?

Ideally, schedule your appointment at least 4–6 weeks before departure. The vaccine certificate generally becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.

Is the vaccine safe?

Most patients tolerate the vaccine well. During your consultation, we review potential risks, contraindications, and whether the vaccine is appropriate based on your age and medical history.

Do I need the vaccine if I’m only connecting through an airport?

Some countries require proof of vaccination even after a layover in a Yellow Fever risk area. We can help determine your specific requirements.
